The High German Sound-Shift Joke
Or like the patches of moisture said to the stone:
"You’re either porous or against us."
And like Don Vito Corleone said, when he became a musical impresario and the guys at the Met kept turning down his projects:
"I’m going to make them an opera they can’t refuse."

Reverend Hawker adds:
The High German Sound-Shift occurred around AD600 in the southern or mountainous part of the Germanic area, and accounts (among other things) for why in English we say OPEN to German's OFFEN, etc.
Obviously it needed a joke making about it.
